I have finished this painting, its not making me a very happy artist as I can see a lot of Disney type things about it, but I will leave it as it is. I need something colourful for space I am exhibiting in, and I think it will hold its own in the small quite dark gallery.....
I am now going to work on some small canvases for a restaurant I exhibit in, impulse buys for happy diners......well don't shoot me, it pays for materials :-)

going completely off the fairytale narrative now, and just enjoying the fullness and richness of colour that I have got on the pages. I would love to be an edgy illustrator ( and will try some less sweet images soon ) but what seems to come out every time I start to draw just isn't edgy at all.......I am looking at this book and thinking how I was told at college /university when I was studying, that sketchbooks shouldn't be full of finished works, they should be ideas, notes to yourself etc. So I am always hearing a little voice when I work teling me what a waste of time this book is, but, I have decided not to listen too hard to the voices, that it is the process that is leading me here, the process of getting a set of ovals dyed and the gems made and cut out, and making my background patterns.....its all like a meditation, I enjoy the whole making rather than the images themselves, the book is my object, the final piece, I may even seal it so that it can never be opened again. It will be great to have one very full, creaking book, and not have another drawer in my studio choc-a-bloc full of drawing that will get crinkled and dusty, books are the way forward for tidy studio spaces :-)

I am still working in my sketchbook, now I am considering it less as a story, more a collection of patterns and illustrations that can be used in a better finished work later on. After all that is what sketchbooks are all about isn't it... sketchbooks are the seedcorn of creativity :-)

I am enjoying the playing with bright colours so much, it really has been making me happy to pick up this little book and draw , but the story line/ narrative has gone a little awry, I am now forgetting all about it being a story told in a straight line in my book, I am going backwards and forwards with my images filling in the gaps. I have started making notes on how the story should go, but i am not really a story teller....like someone once said "if i could put in words why would I need to paint!"
I may put a little outline of the plot on here in a little while, but at the moment I am a little embarrassed to do it :-)

I have been asked about my process and materials..... first of all I go through my book drawing on the pages with felt pen , making my background patterns, I scribble over them a little with water-colour pencils as felt tip is a little harsh sometimes. Then I have made a lot of ink stained papers, random stains so that sometimes they can inspire what goes on the page and I cut out the oval shape I have found fits on the page nicely. The images themselves are really whatever pops into my head, I had started a fairy-tale theme to my images, but they have taken on a life of their own now and I have no idea what the tale is :-) I draw on the inky paper with ordinary felt tip pens, posca pens for the opaque colour and for the black I use a fine liner pen........ I hope all that is what was asked??

Oh, my 'gems' ( I am going a bit over the top with these but I am enjoying them so much :-) ) I use the off-cuts left from making the ovals and then use double sided tape to add them to the drawings :-))
