Amazon make great beds

Beezer, enjoying his bed of paper...not as it appears, he is live and kicking and just enjoys boxes filled with paper :-)

New Hens .....

The hens are here....we have an old coop that we are going to demolish and a new roost/ laying box ready, we are just waiting for the wired enclosure before the girls can move in.......for the moment we are giving them freedom to walk around the garden for a little bit at a time, and then they are locked into their old coop. Previous experience has taught us that the garden will soon be full of dusty trenches and bereft of any plant life, so they are going to have a static coop with freedom only under supervision, usually in the afternoons.
I thought that the dogs would tolerate the hens, they seemed to get on fine until Gert came over and pecked Beezer ( the brown dog ) right between the eyes!!!! feathers an squawking and a running tackle from me separated them........the wire enclosure cannot get here fast enough for me! Now the two little darlings are sitting by the old coop just waiting for a hen to show its head........butter wouldn't melt would it, look at their expressions, they don't want to kill them, they just want to taste one......

where it all began

A photo of our first Grifon,Bumble, sitting among the houses of our little fairy village...sooooooooooo many years ago, nearly 50 years ago......!!!

finished

I think these 6 domes are finished to my satisfaction, one of my other domes has had to be changed because the doll was so fragile she split at her seams where I had arranged her.....a little surgery or another doll will be needed.......soon I will make sense of all of this.....lots of ideas but not going to explain yet, as once i let ideas out of my head they seem to fly away...........

the cast is growing

The cast for my fairytale theatre has grown and grown.....I really must get on with the next stage....or I can see that I will be just collecting stuff for the sake of it. I am getting rather fond of the strange narratives that these objects are showing me as I haphazardly pop them on the shelf....... I may look out for some key elements....keys eggs, castles heart etc, but I think I have enough 'characters' now

Tuesday 4 May 2010

aarrrghhhhh

my new batch of objects are reacting badly to the paint !!! what to do!? i carefully washed and primed and allowed to dry between coats and this crackle appeared .....I will have to find a way of stripping back and spraying again !!! bloomin heck :-(

new addition

Ok I have given in and spent 'real' money on this staircase. I bought it for the largest dome I have, but it is just a squeek too large, so now I will have to find a way to make it free standing......I love it! and when it is painted white it will look amazing, but it was pricey and now i must stop, and stick by my charity shop / carboot rule........ It is lovely tho' don't you think :-)

crow

I may be getting a little silly now...... I have found some decoy crows...very cheap, and then when i was buying paint yesterday there was a bunch of keys in the garden section of the store......so I have put them together.....where on earth is this all going? I really don't know yet, but it is all towards an exhibition I hope....paintings / drawings next :-)

4 finished domes

I am happy with these little domes, they will stay like this for a little while. The joy of the dome is that you can change the items regularly, unlike framing a picture, plus I love how a dome gives great importance to the object placed inside it......

Monday 26 April 2010

photos of the sets so far...

The Fairytale narrative is working quite well in these toys/ ornaments......some I am putting under glass domes, others are free to roam :-)
I am getting frustrated that I cant find the exact objects I am looking for, i have plans and scenes in my head but I have to wait until the objects can be found. I am setting myself the task that they should all be bought at car boot sales and charity shops.........finding them and giving them a new life is a source of great enjoyment for me :-)

collection

my collection is growing.....my camera has run out of batteries now so I can't get on with taking any more pics until tomorrow, but so far so good.....I have had fun with this lot and have even had to empty out my bookcase to house them. I have so many ideas running through my head I can't seem to settle on just one. I have a small exhibition to put up this week and when that is done I may be able to settle down to working on my new ideas.

I have been spraying some more pieces... i like the white, you add colour in your mind :-) I added
a nest to the dove, its harder than you think , making a nest out of twigs.......then i added glitter because as my eyesight fails I like shiny even more :-)

Monday 12 April 2010

an old trick

getting mismatched objects spraying / painting them an all over colour makes them more compatible....this weekends flea market finds are not what I would like in my home usually, but i am in a frivilous mood at the moment and wanted a cheap, quick fix.....now they are all white I can put them together...what do you think? nice? Have a look here on flickr to see what I did with them :-)

Sunday 4 April 2010

twins

found a beautiful pair of really tiny dolls today with perfect little faces, their little dresses look so nice too...I am very happy :-) I am keeping them in an antique glass watch case.....

I have finished this painting, its not making me a very happy artist as I can see a lot of Disney type things about it, but I will leave it as it is. I need something colourful for space I am exhibiting in, and I think it will hold its own in the small quite dark gallery.....
I am now going to work on some small canvases for a restaurant I exhibit in, impulse buys for happy diners......well don't shoot me, it pays for materials :-)

going completely off the fairytale narrative now, and just enjoying the fullness and richness of colour that I have got on the pages. I would love to be an edgy illustrator ( and will try some less sweet images soon ) but what seems to come out every time I start to draw just isn't edgy at all.......I am looking at this book and thinking how I was told at college /university when I was studying, that sketchbooks shouldn't be full of finished works, they should be ideas, notes to yourself etc. So I am always hearing a little voice when I work teling me what a waste of time this book is, but, I have decided not to listen too hard to the voices, that it is the process that is leading me here, the process of getting a set of ovals dyed and the gems made and cut out, and making my background patterns.....its all like a meditation, I enjoy the whole making rather than the images themselves, the book is my object, the final piece, I may even seal it so that it can never be opened again. It will be great to have one very full, creaking book, and not have another drawer in my studio choc-a-bloc full of drawing that will get crinkled and dusty, books are the way forward for tidy studio spaces :-)

I am enjoying the playing with bright colours so much, it really has been making me happy to pick up this little book and draw , but the story line/ narrative has gone a little awry, I am now forgetting all about it being a story told in a straight line in my book, I am going backwards and forwards with my images filling in the gaps. I have started making notes on how the story should go, but i am not really a story teller....like someone once said "if i could put in words why would I need to paint!"
I may put a little outline of the plot on here in a little while, but at the moment I am a little embarrassed to do it :-)

I have been asked about my process and materials..... first of all I go through my book drawing on the pages with felt pen , making my background patterns, I scribble over them a little with water-colour pencils as felt tip is a little harsh sometimes. Then I have made a lot of ink stained papers, random stains so that sometimes they can inspire what goes on the page and I cut out the oval shape I have found fits on the page nicely. The images themselves are really whatever pops into my head, I had started a fairy-tale theme to my images, but they have taken on a life of their own now and I have no idea what the tale is :-) I draw on the inky paper with ordinary felt tip pens, posca pens for the opaque colour and for the black I use a fine liner pen........ I hope all that is what was asked??

Oh, my 'gems' ( I am going a bit over the top with these but I am enjoying them so much :-) ) I use the off-cuts left from making the ovals and then use double sided tape to add them to the drawings :-))

All I do know is that if ever I try this again I will have to write out some sort of story, or use a story board......I am having fun though ;-)

I think I am getting all the colour and fantasy out of my system now, so that i can go back to making some better canvas paintings soon.....this book, journal is really just something I have on my lap in the evenings to doodle in, I hate to say it but its like art therapy, the colours make me feel happy, the story is coming bit by bit so I just draw what I want to draw. I expect as soon as the sun starts shining I will drop this project and get back into my ( hopefully warmer ) studio.

WIP

another horse....work in progress, 3' x 4' canvas again.....I am looking for a wow piece, something that will catch the eye in my exhibition in May, its being held in a quite dark museum space and I want something to get people over to have a look at the rest of my work. I am having some difficulties with the theme, because , oh dear I feel like I want to move away from horses....they aren't inspiring me as much as they used to but the exhibition is called man, horse and myth, so at least for this batch of work I am going to have to carry on with them.......this one is a sun horse...

update...I have completey ruined this, its now destroyed aaarrrggghhhhh !!!

I have been given some old pantone inks, I think they are meant to top up some type of felt pen, but they have been dicontinued. These are spirit based inks, very toxic smelling, but gorgeous colours. I have tried them on paper and they bleed through quite badly, but then I found some yupo paper that I had bought years ago and not got on well with. The inks look fabulous on it. I had great fun playing with the effects, but now what to do with the paper.....

so true

This amused me, and dismayed me, I have been guilty of being affected by all of these points......am I / have I been shooting myself in the foot all my life! So new years resolution, try and make art for myself, not for the perceived audience / critic....just do it, and get it out there. After all I am getting on, I feel that time and fashion are not on my side, I really need to get going.....2010 could be a better year, couldn't it? :-)
